Introduction
Diners Club, the preferred charge card among frequent business travelers and affluent individuals, dominates the global travel segment in more than 200 countries and 54 local currencies. Diners Club serves merchants around the world by motivating Diner Club Card members to patronize merchants who welcome the Card.
According to the Nilson Report, Diners Club card members make the highest annual spend than any other card.
A "merchant" is an authorized member of Diners Club's growing network of outlets that accept the card. Currently, there are 8.2+ million merchants worldwide and over four thousand outlets in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Our merchants have the honor of seeing the best customers coming through their doors! Fraud ManagementA merchant outlet is the front line against credit card fraud! Everyone benefits when a merchant is vigilant in the fight to prevent fraudulent use of credit cards. Following tips are given to merchants as part of Fraud Awareness Program of Diners Club International to help reduce losses both to the merchants and to Diners Club International.
1. The Basics of Fraud Prevention
- Hold on to the card until the transaction is completed
- Check cards presented for signs of alteration or counterfeiting
- Compare the numbers - the embossed numbers on the front, back and on the sales slip should MATCH
- Verify signatures - signature on the back of card and on sales receipt should MATCH
2. Identifying Potentially Fraudulent Transactions
- Making random purchases without regard to size, value or price
- Multiple purchases of identical items
- Purchasing large items and refusing delivery
- Attempts to rush through transactions or rush sales just prior to closing
- Displays no interest in warranties for expensive items, or accepts without consideration
- Presenting a credit card from a pocket rather than a wallet
- If asked for photo ID, the customer claims to have left such identification at home or in the car
- If the customer appears to be unusually young for utilizing credit cards
- If the customer is overly slow and deliberate when signing the sales receipt or quickly sign the receipt
3. When You Suspect Fraud
If you or an employee suspects fraud, contact Diners Club International Authorization at: 800-244-0244 Remember, an approval number DOES NOT mean the absence of fraud.
4. Standard Security Features Common to Diners Club International Cards
The following is intended to give you an overview of security features found on Diners Club International Cards.
- Account numbers are 14 digits, beginning with 38 or 36
- World map is set against a microprint wavy lined background (DC Personal Card and all

a. Is this the card member?
- The Diners Club Card is NON-TRANSFERABLE. Only the card member may use the Card.
- Do the names match?
- Verify that the name embossed on the card, in the signature panel, and appearing on the sales slip or terminal are the same
b. Do the signatures match?
- Check the card.
- Check the sales slip.
- Compare the signatures. Are they the same? Is the name misspelled or different?
c. Do the account numbers match? d. Is the account number on the front and back of the card and on the sales slip the same? e. Is this a valid card? f. Verify the Valid From and Expiration dates embossed on the card front. g. Is the card signed?
6. Is the signature panel normal?
- Does the Diners Club logo appear in the panel?
- Is the account number engraved into the panel?
- Is the 3-digit Card Verification Value, (CVV), security code engraved into the panel?
- Has the panel been altered or does it appear to have been erased?

11. Credit Card Skimming
Credit card skimming is the transferring of magnetic stripe data from one credit card to another. AT NO TIME will a Diners Club International card be embossed with one name and account number but display another when processed through your terminal. Again, check the embossed numbers on the front of the card and back of the card against the sales slip. The numbers should be the same.
12. Mail Order / Telephone Order
To avoid the risk of fraud, remember to ask the card member for:
- Their name exactly as it appears on the card
- Their card account number
- Card Valid From date
- Expiration date
- Billing address IN ADDITION TO the shipping address
- Home or business telephone number
- Telephone number to reach the card member [if different than home or business number]
To verify the billing address, call Diners Club International Authorizations at 800-244-0244 to verify the billing address.
